I could have spent the last few days writing articles about the various announcements at Comic Con International, but that would have been a bit redundant and a waste of my time. Dozens of sites exist that are already devoted to bringing the fans up-to-the-date announcements. What I will do, however, is point out some of the things that appealed to me personally.
Please comment on my favorite SDCC moments and also name some of your own in the comments section below.
-The final LOST Comic Con International Panel.
I’ve been a fan of the show since the pilot, so to know that the show is only one season away from the end is both exciting and depressing. I’m anxiously awaiting the answers to the show’s big mysteries, but saddened that yet another of my favorite shows is ending. (I was a ‘Battlestar’ fan, and that show ended this past season.)
-The Iron Man 2 Panel.
I loved the first film, and was one of the people in the audience who knew that Rhodey was gonna do more than stare at that suit of armor in the future. The official announcement (through a trailer) of War Machine being in the film is pretty cool. I think it’s probably cooler for the fans of the comic, like me, than to just fans of the film who have no idea what’s coming. The film has a great cast. I’m just hoping they learned a lesson from Spider-Man 3 and try not to do too many things and focus on too many characters in too short of a time-span.
-The ‘New Moon’ Panel.
Yes, I know Twilight is crappy masturbatory tween girl fantasy, but when my sister found out and asked why we weren’t hopping on a plane to San Diego to go to Comic Con International, it made my day just a little better.
-The X-Men Panel.
There were two big storylines announced at the panel. The first, ‘Necrosha,’ lo0ks like a big step in Craig Kyle and Chris Yost’s X-Force and also a resolution of sorts to some of the dangling plot threads left over from the duo’s work on New X-Men. The second story’s title, ‘X-Nation,’ seems to give away a bit of what is in store for mutant-kind. Either way, I’m glad to see Magneto return with a seemingly new agenda. If ‘X-Nation’ is what I think it is, it could provide an awesome new status quo for the mutants, which in turn could be a breeding ground for cool new stories.
-The BOOM! Studios Panel.
BOOM! Studios has to be my favorite up-and-coming comic company. They’ve made a ton of great business decisions over the past year, not the least of which was getting the rights to successful properties such as The Incredibles, Finding Nemo, Mickey Mouse and the other iconic Disney characters, and The Muppet Show. The recent miniseries, Roger Langridge’s The Muppet Show Comic Book. was well received both critically and commercially, with each issue going through multiple printings. The announcement of a Langridge helmed The Muppet Show Comic Book ongoing series was not too surprising, but very pleasing. I look forward to reading the series.
BOOM! Studios has also made the right creative decisions. By hiring great writers with great concepts (i.e. Mark Sable’s Unthinkable) Last year’s motto was “Mark Waid is Evil.” This pointed toward the Waid-written series Irredeemable. It seems that this year’s motto, which was “accidentally” in the BOOM! Studios presentation, is “Mark Waid is Incorruptable.” I can’t help but look forward to whatever this phrase is foreshadowing.
-Venture Bros. Panel
I love this show. I can watch any of the episodes from any of the seasons at any time of the day. Needless to say, I was ecstatic to find out that the show was coming back sooner than I thought. The show starts again in November with guest voices such as Kevin Conroy, John Hodgman, Patton Oswalt, and Seth Green.
